Tips for hiring a moving company

Created on: November 26, 2009

When was the last time you had to think about moving? Do you remember all of the hours you spent trying to pack and load and then unpack again? How about the mad hunt to find the boxes you need? And what if your move was out of state or cross county?

Moving is never a fun event for anyone, especially if you have children or animals. People move for a lot of different reasons. Some people move for personal reasons like divorces, marriage, or sometimes even a death in the family. Some families move to get a fresh start in life or to relocate for work. Whatever your reason is for moving, the less that you have to deal with the easier the transition is going to be.

Finding a mover that is affordable in your area could make moving a happy event. There are many things to look for when searching for an affordable moving company.

Find out if they charge a flat rate for moving or if they charge by the mile or by the hour, or even both. If you are relocating cross-country a flat rate mover is probably going to offer you a more affordable rate. Of course you will always want get more than one estimate from moving companies.

Make sure to get a complete list of all of the services you are entitled to by using a company. Flat rate movers will give an estimate for the job as one big overall quote, while some cheap movers will charge by the hour and based on the length of the drive. Choose the mover that is least expensive for your situation, but that also offers the most value for your dollar.
Remember that you have many options when it comes to making a move.

Many moving companies offer services to make your life easier. They can come fully prepared to help with supplies for packing like boxes, tape, labels, packing supplies and more. They will even pack everything up in the trucks for you. Most movers specialize in bigger items, such as pianos, dressers and other large furniture. The moving company you choose can disassemble and reassemble your larger furniture if required, and can even go ahead of the family and get things unloaded to make your move a little easier.

Make sure that your movers are insured or bonded and ask lots and lots of questions. What if my stuff gets damaged in the move? Will the movers unload the trucks? Do they reassemble my furniture or help me unpack? Are the packing supplies included in the cost of the move? Are there any hidden costs? Be thorough when asking these questions and take the names of the employees with whom you talked.

By following the above tips, you should find that moving across the city or across the country is made a little easier with the help of a mover. Above all else, remember to research your options carefully and ask lots of questions. There is nothing worse than arriving at your destination to discover that some little detail has been missed. Take the time to choose the right mover and the details should take care of themselves.
