Technical theatre appreciation

by James Olny

Created on: February 16, 2007   Last Updated: May 01, 2007

As any theatrical "techie" on here well knows, the actors take pretty much all of the credit. I'm sure all of you have been in that situation where you saw you are a part of a show going up, or have a crew shirt on, and someone exclaims, "HEY! you're in ______! Who do you play!?" and you awkwardly say, "Well, actually, I'm the Sound Designer" or "Well, actually, I'm just building the set." This inevitably ends time and time again with an "oh...." followed by a resoundingly awkward silence. Even the highest and most lauded technical positions receive this kind of response 99% of the time. Appreciation for theatre goes much deeper than what is seen so clearly on stage. After all, how do you think it all got there? So for all of you techies out there, take it in stride! You know how hard you've worked and the quality of work you've put out to make a damn good show.

If you feel so compelled, follow up with some of your more awkward or funny situations that you've been in like this.
