I like to think I'm the sandwich queen and make the best around. When I was young I worked in a sandwich shop and during the lunch hour people would wait in line for me to make their sandwich, even if someone else was available. There is an art, at least in my opinion, to making a sandwich but there are a few things that are standard.
1. The bread. I know, there are those that will say the quality of the bread makes the sandwich but to me it's the filling and condiments that really brings the level up a notch. If you don't have access to a bakery, regular grocery store bread will do. I have even been known to use white bread ( I know, awful right?), but toasting it really does make it good, reminiscent of an easier time even.
2. The condiments are very important, regardless of the type of bread. For most sandwiches I use mayonnaise and mustard, mixed on one side and just mayo on the other.
3. The filling. This really determines what else goes on the sandwich and what condiments are used but generally something with a meat and cheese is what I prefer.
So, what are some of my favorite sandwiches? I'll start with the one from the sandwich shop since that was my first experience as a sandwich queen.
Hot Ham and Cheese, when I have the extra time:
1.Spread rye bread on both sides with mayo. Be generous but don't let clumps form, it must be spread. On one side of the bread, spread a little red pepper sandwich mix, just enough to change the color of the mayo a bit.
2. Place ham on top of the bread without the peppers, as much as you like. Place thinly sliced tomato and onion on top and them finish up with cheese. I like a somewhat mild cheese like muenster. Place in the toaster oven, not the microwave and toast long enough to fully melts.
3. Top the sandwich with the bread that has just mayo, eat and enjoy!
Turkey and avocado.
1. Any bread is fine here but on this sandwich I think a good whole-wheat works best or a roll since it will hold the ingredients inside best.
Spread the bread on both sides with mayo. Place turkey on the bread, then add cheese, havarti tastes great with this, top with tomato and avocado.
Corned beef deluxe
This one really need rye bread, it just doesn't taste the same on anything else, except may a roll.
1. Spread the bread with mustard only-any one you like is fine. Place a generous amount of corned beef on top, next place muenster cheese on top of that and top with coleslaw. Yum!
