There are several ways to make a business more effective. Cross training your workforce is one of the best ways do it! Are you thinking about cross training your workers? Here are three great reasons to why cross training your workforce is a worthwhile goal.
1.) Higher productivity
This is so obvious but well worth examining. When more than one person can do the job, subsequently it allows the business to flow, and permits it to sustain regularity and reliability. If someone is sick, someone else can perform the tasks. When business demands change, workers can be relocated to keep up with the demand.
At first it may seem a difficult task to accomplish. However cross training should be viewed as a process. It is a continual course of action. All your training should be viewed this way. Don't let a day go by without working on training your workers. This can be with new information and techniques., but also reviews for standards and procedures. It may be a long time since training and people can forget. Also sometimes things change and not everyone gets the memo. When you cross train you will constantly be keeping standards and policies in the forefront and on the front burner, and that is good for business.
2.) Happier workforce
You will have happier and more effective workers with a cross training program. Workers like to feel needed, but like to know that if they need a sick day, it won't cause a major catastrophe because of their absence. They also benefit from cross training in many ways. It breaks up the monotony by having the ability to perform different tasks, and it also makes them more valuable to the company.
It is important to included a segment about cross training in your interview process. Set expectations early. As for your current staff, offer pay increases as incentives along the way, as rewards for accomplishing cross training and as a result performing better. If you have resistant people, and you will, do your best to work with them. Some people are resistant to change. However this is the new expectation, and eventually, if someone is unwilling to accept the new direction, it may be time for them to look for another job.
3.) Better service to your customers
Your ultimate goal is to enhance the overall performance of your business. When you have a workforce that can perform a variety of jobs you will offer outstanding service to your customers. Happy customers come back. As your customers come to expect this higher level of performance your cross training efforts will be rewarded by repeat and increased business.
By cross training your employees you will increase productivity, have a happier and more effective workforce, and you will offer better service to your customers. Remember this is a process and not a task. Be patient, offer encouragement, and always reward good performance.
