Like so many of us,I recently had the opportunity to meet my boyhood hero. It was a very cold day in january, i had been looking forward to this day with the anticipation a kid has when he is waiting to open christmas presents on chrsitmas morning. I felt nervous when we got into the car to make the fifteen minute drive to The Iowa Cubs Fan Fest. When we got there it took a few moments to find the area of the hall where they were holding the fan fest. I took off just like a little kid,(being 34 that may seem a bit silly),but when you have been waiting for as long as i had you would have also. My girlfriend and I finally got to the escalators and proceeded up to the top floor and gave our tickets to the gentleman at the door. when we got into the large ballroom type of room i had finally calmed down enough to stroll througout the place looking at all the vendors that were there selling anything from signed football helmets to signed baseball bats. We proceeded to get some autographs from other cub heroes such as Jody Davis, Eric Patterson,Bob Dernier, and local favorite and Hall of Famer, Bob Feller,we heard the call over the P.A. for people to get in line to get my hero and Cub legend Andre Dawson's autograph. Simultaneosly i began to get that nervous anticipation again. I raced to the door just to see him enter the room and take his seat at the table for a two and a half hour long autograph session. It took about an hour for the annoucer to call for my ticket group,it seemed like forever. I stood in line with many people who may recall alll the good things he did throughtout his time in chicago and maybe even some that realized how good he was with montreal, but none i doubt that call him there"hero". When i finally reached the front of the line i realized that i had finally reached a goal of mine, to meet my hero. I proceeded to tell him I hoped that soon they would realize what a mistake they were making by not puttting him in the hall of fame. He smiled and said,"I hope they will someday." Andre the signed my baseball and posed for a picture with me. I will have that memory forever.
