Being diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder, I've done more research on the topic than I thought to be possible. Every article will expose you to reasons, symptoms, treatment, recovery, everything. The goal: put all of this information in words anyone can understand, and be concise.
The Medical Dictionary defines bipolar disorder as A psychiatric disorder marked by alternating episodes of mania and depression. Translated this means a mental disorder wherein one has periods of happiness and sadness (ups and downs).
According to LAMICTAL's website (a medication used to treat bipolar 1 disorder), people may find one to be reckless due to the mood changes that frequent them. The site also informs that bipolar disorder does not go away. It sticks around like a shadow. People diagnosed with this disorder are greatly encouraged to find some sort of treatment.
Suicide.org states that 25-50% of individuals diagnosed with bipolar disorder attempt suicide. That's a pretty decent chance, but no one has to be part of a statistic. Upon perusing the site, I also came across the information that most people who attempt suicide attempt more than once.
Our very own SKetcham of Helium tells us in his article Causes of Bipolar Disorder that it is obvious to most that there is no single cause for the disorder and that many factors work together to produce the illness.
Another Helium author Darlene Zagata wrote Bipolar disorder: Symptoms and treatment where she informs us that over 5 million Americans alone have been diagnosed with bipolar disorder.
From a first hand point of view, I have found that this is a very confusing disorder. There are random urges to just throw everything away that can last any length of time, and then the complete opposite. Bipolar Disorder can give reason as to why I am the way I am in every aspect of life.
However, life sincerely is what you make it. A pessimistic attitude from the start only makes things worse, but that's not to say that an optimistic attitude is going to solve all the problems. Lows or states of depression tend to last longer and be more frequent than manic states. This is where one should find a hobby.
Many people diagnosed with bipolar disorder are put on medication. Some of these medications include Seroquel, Abillify, Eskalith, Clozaril, FazaClo, Mellaril, Risperdal, Zyprexia, Prozac, Zoloft, and about 24 other medications (healthline.com). Some of these medications are also used to treat seizures, so don't be surprised if your regular doctor asks you about seizures.
In short, bipolar disorder is yet another mental disorder that can and likely will interrupt the patient's life. Seeing a psychiatrist for medication is highly suggested by everyone and can prove helpful. Having a hobby or outlet to relieve stressors and anxiety is definitely recommended so more detrimental actions are not taken.
