Outdoor activities in winter: How to stay warm and safe

One of the most common forms of outdoor fun in winter has to be the football tailgate party. You are there to cheer your favorite team to victory, (actually you want to see the opposing team annihilated,) but the party, the companionship, and the food are almost as important.

First of all make a checklist of the items you will need. A sturdy grill of course, and a couple of ice chests; one for keeping already prepared foods cold and the other for the beer and/or soft drinks on ice. You need a few folding chairs, plastic ware, condiments, mugs or styrofoam cups, chips, dips, buns, etc., and most importantly, the main meat of the day. This usually means beef patties, franks or sausages; but these parties are often famous for their quarterback steaks.

You will also need plastic trash bags for disposing of your mess during and after the party. Be a wild fan if you must, be keep your area clean. Oh, by the way don't forget a good quality bottle opener

Remember those blankets or snuggies, portable televisions, radios, card tables, flashlights or lanterns, and enough team banners, flags, mugs, placards and pom-poms to give everyone a chance to show their team spirit. You might even want to give a spirit award to the most enthusiastic of the crowd, but be forewarned; that is not always easy or, after a few beers, wise.

To vent that extra team spirit, bring face paints in the team colors, number one foam fingers, hats with the team name or mascot, and turn your guests loose.

It is essential that you stake your space early before the parking lot is full. Plan your grilling area and set up an extra table to serve as the buffet.

You might be interested in a few pre-party tips:

1. Have burgers formed and wrapped in foil.

2. Use a hot casserole wrap to keep warm foods warm.

3. Warm hot drinks just before leaving home and keep them in an insulated jog.

4. Keep all needed utensils in a plastic box with a cover

5. Plan mostly on finger foods, but if your menu dictates otherwise, bring along the necessary plates, napkins, paper towels, knifes and forks, and extra garbage bags.

One of the most popular foods in demand for your party is bratwurst. You might want to try this method of cooking and serving:

6 Bratwursts
1 12 ounce can of beer
1 medium onion, chopped
4 cloves
A few peppercorns (3 or 4)
6 rolls

Simmer the brats in beer so they are juicy and filled with extra flavor.

In a large pot combine all ingredients except rolls, and simmer over low heat for 20 minutes. Remove the brats and transfer
