Prologue

Sweat beaded on their foreheads as they carried her into the bedroom. One held her under the arms while the other transported her legs. At one point, her head lolled sharply to one side allowing a small line of drool to escape her lips and run down the side of her face.

“She’s heavy!”

“Not too bad, just awkward.” The other spoke, his voice hushed. “Just set her down on the bed.”

The one carrying her by the arms groaned as he heaved her lifeless body onto the mattress. A light whimper escaped her as she landed, her left arm bent awkwardly beneath her.

“Careful!” The other snapped as he straightened her arm out. “Check the windows, will you, make sure the locks are fastened. She’ll be waking up soon.”

“Should we tie her hands and feet?”

“Not yet, we’ll see how it goes.”

“Do you have the sedatives?”

“Yes. She’ll probably need a few more doses.” The edge of the mattress sank as he sat down beside her.

Running his hands through her short blonde hair, his fingertips trailed down her cheek. Staring at her angelic face as he leaned over, his lips grazed her ear as he whispered. “Welcome home.”

Chapter 2

Saliva, coalesced with the aftertaste of drug, pooled in the hollow of my cheek. Though part of my mouth was wet, the other half felt like it had been stuffed with cotton batting. Swallowing hard, I rolled my tongue over my teeth and was instantly sickened by the grime that had accumulated.

My mind felt heavy and drunk. I was sure if I moved too fast my brain would slosh around and hit the inside of my skull. Normally my sixteen-year-old mind was sharp as a tack, but right now, I had the intellect of a mushroom.

Awareness crept back as I fought to open my reluctant eyelids. Sediment had formed in the creases, sealing my eyes shut like glue.

“That’s what happens when you cry too much.” A well-known and sarcastic voice said from the recesses of my mind. I wanted to tell it to shut up, but I’ve already told it a million times and it never listens.

Somewhere in the room, a clock ticked redundantly making me wonder what time it was. Even with my eyes closed, I could tell it was daytime. A beam of sunshine was heating up the right side of my face.

Prying my unwilling eyes open, a panic surged through me as I was greeted with blurry vision.

“My glasses! Where are my glasses?!”
