Christmas 2009: Gift ideas for the handyman

Choosing Christmas presents for people with specific hobbies and interests is simply a matter of a little thought and consideration. If you have a handyman on your Christmas list this year, with just a bit of help, choosing the perfect gift will be a breeze.

The first thing you need to consider is what kind of projects this handyman undertakes. There is a huge difference between the handyman who is attempting to build a bookshelf in the basement, and the one who is building a two car garage in the yard. Once you know which kind of handyman your buying for, you can get started.

Suggested gifts for the handyman:

A tool belt, check to be sure the waist size fits or that it is adjustable.

A tool box, there are many varieties of size and price.

Tool box filler, include some smaller items to put inside the tool box such as a hammer or measuring tape and some small packets of screws and nails.

Magazine subscription such as The Family Handyman, include the first issue with your gift.

Safety glasses

Screw drivers and wrenches, usually available in combo packs at great low prices.

Gift card to your local hardware store, Canadian Tire or Home Depot.

If you are looking to spend a little more, a great gift for the novice handyman is a complete project. Choose something small and manageable. Have the hardware store staff set you up with all the materials needed. For the expert handyman, ask about the hottest new tools and gadgets on the market. Be sure to choose the right tools for the type of handyman you have on your list. For example, a regular level is fine for the novice, but a laser level may be more appropriate for the expert. Another good tip is to have a peek at the space their tools occupy. If it is disorganized and cluttered, purchase some storage units and remember to attach a note to the gift stating you are willing to help organize the space.

If you are unfamiliar with the hardware and tools sections, try not to get overwhelmed. Take your time choosing and do not be afraid to ask for help. Perhaps you could bring along a friend who is more comfortable and knowledgeable about tools, brand names and hardware.

No matter what you choose for the handyman on your list, they will appreciate it. Most people are thrilled to realize that you know their interests and made the effort to include their hobbies in your gift decision.
