What is a Facebook wall?

Without a doubt, the wall is the lifeblood of Facebook. Without it, Facebook would be just another run-of-the-mill social networking site.

But what's so great about a Facebook wall? Well, for starters, a wall can be found on each and every individual's profile page, including business profiles. The wall logs what event each user pursues through the course Facebook visit. Older versions of Facebook had a date and time associated with every action. The newest version of Facebook only adds dates and times to photo album postings and comments made on other walls.

Each and every event is logged on the wall. If a user adds another person as a friend, both users' walls will be updated with information that reflects the new network by adding a bullet that "Person A and Person B are now friends."

Walls also keep track of comments that a user makes on other individual's profiles. Wall comments and photo comments are generally recorded on the wall, and additionally, any "Like" buttons that have been pressed will be recorded there as well.

The wall is most commonly used for writing comments to "friends". Most users write comments back and forth with friends to keep in touch. Although no more difficult than writing a message, the wall is more easily accessible.

A second common use for the wall involves posting updates for applications which the user has loaded to his or her profile. Each app has an icon and automatically updates the wall with information. Notes can be displayed so other users can easily access and read those notes. Survey results are displayed on the wall as well.

The wall is also used to update status information. Users can tell their friends how they're feeling that day, what major events are coming up in the near future, what their favorite band is, or any other random thought.

The wall displays picture updates for each user. Any albums which are uploaded, or pictures taken by other friends in which the user is tagged are shown on a person's wall.

In addition to all of the other updates, the wall can be used to update relationship statuses and group membership. Each relationship update informs the user's friends of a change in a relationship with someone. Also, any group-related items such as new membership or a leadership role are posted to the members' walls.

Each update on the wall makes it easy for users to find new apps to try out, and to communicate with other individuals. Without the wall and all of its user-action-related postings, Facebook wouldn't be nearly as interesting and easy to connect with other friends as it is today.
