The Airedale Terrier is known as the King of Terriers because it is the largest dog in the terrier group. An Airedale is typically 22 to 23 inches tall and weighs between 45 and 60 pounds, but larger dogs have been recorded.
The Airedale terrier, or Dales as they are sometimes referred, originated in the Aire Valley of England. The exact history is unknown; however, they are believed to have been a cross between an Otterhound and the now extinct, Black and Tan terrier during the middle 1800's for the purpose of hunting and killing rodents.
Later, the Airedales were used in hunting large game in India and Africa. Throughout history, Airedales have been involved as working dogs, sporting dogs, and war dogs. This breed has been used for police and military work. Many people refer to Airedales as the one of the most versatile dogs in the world.
Airedales are unique in appearance. They have a wiry, dense coat with a softer undercoat. The coat is tan and black. Typically, the black portion forms a saddle over the Airedale's back. The head, lower legs, chest and belly are tan. Sometimes the ears are a darker tan color than the head.
Airedales are considered hypoallergenic dogs due to minimal shedding. Their coat does require brushing several times a week, at least. Due to an Airedales size and hair texture, haircuts and grooming can be costly unless the owner choose to do the job, which is time consuming.
Because Airedales were bred to hunt, they require plenty of exercise. This breed is very intelligent and needs mental stimulation. If denied physical and mental stimulation for days, these animals can exhibit destructive behavior. Airedales are active animals well into their senior years, which is generally 10 to 12 years.
Airedales have a high tolerance for pain and have few health problems; however, they are prone to hip dysplasia, hypothyroidism, and skin problems. This breed can be stubborn, so a firm training regimen is required.
Disadvantages of owning an Airedale are: 1) they are not recommended for apartment living, 2) not recommended for households with cats, small animals, or small children, 3) need socialization, exercise, and mental stimulation, 4) they can be stubborn, and 5) they have high maintenance grooming requirements.
Advantages of owning an Airedale terrier are: 1) they are loyal to their families, 2) they are very protective of their families, 3) they are very intelligent and curious, 4) they have few health concerns, 5) they retain a playful stage much of their life, 5) they have a sense of humor, and 6) they adjust well as a member of the family.
Airedales are definitely not for every household; however, for those families that match well with these animals the rewards of owning an Airedale are immense.
