Most of us are looking forward to the holidays at the end of the year. By decorating the house few weeks before Christmas can help to get ready for the holiday season for kids and parents. Making decorations at home will help to make the waiting for Christmas more magical for everyone. You shouldn't buy expensive decorations when you can make your house warm and welcoming with home made decorations.
You don't need lots of decorations, by putting a few items in each room will make your house festive. Try and use red and silver or gold colors mainly. Most children like sticking, painting and baking and it is a very good way to keep them entertain during the long evenings in December while they are waiting for Christmas. Get them an advent calendar what they can open every day while counting down to Christmas Day. If you don't want to buy one, you can make a unique one at home, putting different small items in each of the calendars drawer. A home made calendar could be used as part of the decoration. The children can make some decorations for the tree and for their room, while you can put red and gold or silver candles in your living room.
Put some pine twigs into a wicker basket or glass bowl. Decorate them with red ribbons, sliced dried orange and small candles. It could be a table decoration on the coffee table in the living room. Get a small red, green or golden tablecloth and it will give your coffee table a festive look. Stick some cloves into an orange, put it in a bowl somewhere in the room or in the kitchen, it will give a lovely Christmas smell and will look nice for weeks. You can even put a thin candle on the top to make it more cheerful.
You can buy Christmas candles if you like and you can even get some incense to create some nice smell in your house. If you like baking, bake some bell, star, tree shaped ginger biscuits, you can decorate them with icing and with a string you can use some of them as tree decorations. If you feel brave enough you can make a gingerbread house as well. Just cut the walls and roof out of the dough; bake them and at the end you can stick them together in 3D using icing. Finally you can draw windows, door with colored icing.
Don't forget to put a Christmas wreath on your front door. Some people like to buy one every year others are keeping the same for years. If you like the natural one made out of pine twigs you will have to buy or make your own every year. Also a few pine twigs would do with some ribbons or Christmas tree decoration. If you like put some lights out in the garden and in the windows.
Start your house decorations couple of weeks before Christmas it will help you and your family to get ready for the holiday.
