Poetry: The masks we wear

by Mike Patrick

MASK

I wear a mask of wisdom,
Yet can not control my life.
I wear a mask of courage
That crumbles 'for my wife.

I weave a life of deception
And tell the world it's so.
I wave the flag of patriotism
And want not my sons to go.

The mask I place before me
Reflects what I wish was true.
Instead of all my masks,
I'd rather I was you.
