Winter exercises: How to enjoy winter walks

by Shirley Love

Created on: November 23, 2009

A walk through the brisk winter morning can set your mood for the entire day. It will definitely diminish any thoughts of cabin fever, winter doldrums, or hibernation. It is a healthy way to keep in shape both in body and mind and serves perfectly to inspire the poet in us.

The landscape in winter takes on a different look, just as it does in each season. We have enjoyed the signs of rebirth in spring, the joys of vital life in summer, and the beauty in the surrender of the year with the fall foliage. Winter is the time for reflection and a look at the soul of the universe and there is no better way to witness this transformation than by walking hand in hand with nature.

You must, of course, be prepared for your walk. You will need to dress accordingly with the recommended three layers of clothing. The weight of the fabrics will depend on the severity of the cold as well as the briskness of your walk. Dress for warmth, but you can always remove the outer layer of clothing, such as a lightweight wind breaker, if you become too warm.

Warm socks and fleece-lined walking shoes will keep your feet warm, and the use of a hat and gloves is all-important since you lose most of your body heat through the hands, feet, and the head.

Carry a small bottle of water and some dried fruit or hard candy in your hiking bag, along with your cell phone in case of an emergency.

Plan your route ahead of time and stick to that plan. If you are walking alone, you might want to let a friend or relative know where you will be and what time you plan to return home. It is advisable to walk with a friend, but if you prefer the solitude, it can be safe to walk alone by using a little common sense. If you walk in the afternoon or evening, do not venture so far from home that you cannot get back before dark. The days are shorter and the shadows arrive earlier, so keep that fact in mind.

Avoid icy spots when possible. Even if your shoes are equipped with the protective slip-on cleats, falls are still a possibility. If you should fall and have problems regaining your footing, call a friend and let them know your location. You might even resort to calling 911. This is why it is imperative that you know where you are at all times.

With the proper preparation, your winter walk can be a pleasant experience that will refresh you, invigorate you, and inspire you.

Let your imagination go wild! Pretend those snow covered trees are an Alpine wilderness, and if you listen closely the wind making its way through them may actually sound like a yodel. Pretending isn't just for kids, you know. It makes for great poetry, and you are the poet.
