Discrimination continues to show its ugly face and is still prevalent in todays so-called 'modern' society. However, a lot of people like to pretend that it doesn't exist. Let me tell you, I found out first hand it is still very much alive and festering on planet Earth!
I was trying to make a point to someone the other day in an e-mail about how he was not an honest man, because instead of telling me the truth about something, he blatantly lied. I have since apologized and admitted that I was wrong in my choice of words that I ended my e-mail with: "As my people used to say, which still stands true: "White man speaks with forked tongue."
I suppose by using that term, I opened myself for ridicule and in some sense it was a racist remark to make, since I was writing to a 'white man'. But then again, I am also part white, but I still have enough Indian blood in my veins to be able to declare that I am also 'part Cherokee'. And in defense of myself, I could say that since I am more white than Indian, maybe I did have the right to defend my native brothers and sisters by using that term. I could have said something more like, "You certainly are not an "Honest Abe," or, "like George Washington who could not tell a lie". I wonder if he would have become so offended, or insulted had I used that term instead. I mean, I would still have been insinuating that he was a liar.
However, I was appalled with his answer. But what truly amazed me, was how he knew he was wrong for lying. After all, he did caught, yet he had to make himself look good by attacking the Native American race overall, instead of being a 'real' man and just apologizing for getting caught at lying.
This man says he is an Agriculturist. His first insult was to say that for me to quote my Indian ancestors was a joke to him. He said in spite of the publicity of them being the first native americans, that they were the worst environmentalist this land has ever known. He further stated that they defiled their own camp sites, which is partially why they had to move all the time among other reasons. [Of course he didn't state any OTHER reason]. Then, he lowered the boom and showed what a racist bigot he really is and how prejudice he is about my people. He said: "They are GENETICALLY PREDISPOSED to alcohol, drugs, and laziness. It might not have been so bad had he just said a lot of them have alcohol and drug problems, which I cannot deny, but for him to imply that the reason for those addictions was genetically
