Metamorphosis
Through this self imposed exile I lie in wait, to discover what I have become, what I have always been. The "I" that was known is reduced to a primordial broth. A mere remnant of the self that once crawled along, content to feed on the lowest branches, while all the while gazing towards a sky that at once seemed alien yet reminiscent. The pangs of reordered existence haunt the fabric of my being, a subtle doubt creeps in; who am I to soar the lofty heights? Then at once, and with gentle reprieve, this shroud of unknowing, this beleaguered shell of former actuality, breaks with the dawn to reveal a soul anew. With raised head and open wing, the heavens beckon forth. I soar with the grace of angels, and shine with a beauty never before imagined, only now realized. I have died to myself only to be reborn once more, into a world whose attitude and altitude are my liberty, my birthright, and my true home.

In Portland, Oregon,
even the gray ocean above cuts into itself,
even the spreading of space,
even the wandering nomads,
all
