Every year around my birthday (or Christmas time) I am approached by my mother and asked to make a list of things I would like to receive as a gift and, as I am extremely easy to please, I don't have high expectations. Rarely am I disappointed in whatever gifts are offered by my family and friends. Most of them know me well enough that a list is often not needed. I am a very creative person and anything having to do with painting, such as new canvas, brushes, paint, an easel, etc... would be awesome. I also enjoy reading, writing and journaling a lot so a new pen, notebook, lamp for my desk, a new journal, stationery, or a new book would please me as well. Last year my mother, in her infinite wisdom and knowledge of me, gave me a blank scrapbook with an assortment of page inserts, decals, stickers, pens, markers, border scissors and other things that kept me occupied for weeks. She knows me too well. And I didn't even have to put it on my list.
Another big interest of mine is music. I have an extensive CD/cassette tape/album collection that I have been amassing for over 25 years. I doubt it will ever be complete because I hear new music that I want to have as my own everyday. Therefore, adding a new CD to my stash would not disappoint me in any way; unless of course, I already own it. This isn't a big problem though; easily exchanged for something else. However, if someone was uncomfortable buying a CD for me for fear of duplication, I would also be happy to receive my favorite musicians' biographies or autobiographies; even magazines with articles about them. As I said, I am extremely easy to please.
OK, so you don't know me very well and wouldn't have a clue about any of that stuff. Just met me, for instance and want to offer me something nice, something safe. I absolutely love house plants. If it has to do with growing something green out of a pot or the Earth, I am all for it. Bring it on. I will try to grow it. Other safe gift ideas? Candles, jewelry, a new coffee mug, gift baskets (like the kind with bath gels and lotions in them), fruit baskets, or how about box of chocolate? There are many areas in gift shops and malls that have gift sets that cater to all types of people, whether you know them well or not. Gift giving is not hard if you stop and think about people. Everybody has got to bathe and eat, right? In the end, it really is the thought that counts anyway.
