Fasting is an important aspect of many major religions, such as Islam, Judaism, and Christianity. It has been long debated whether or not fasting is good for you, but the fact that fasting improves health in some aspects is undeniable.

Fasting technically starts within the first 12 to 24 hours of food deprivation. However, a fast does not chemically begin until the body starts to use carbohydrate stores as an energy source. The fast will remain as long as carbohydrate and fat stores are being used for energy, instead of getting energy from food. Once the body starts to use protein stores, however, the fast is unhealthy and should be stopped immediately. When the body uses protein stores for energy, the person is technically starving and will lose muscle mass. The health benefits of fasting can be observed when we look at the body's progression when deprived of food. The body must turn to its own resources to provide energy, a process called autolysis. Autolysis is the breaking down of fat stores in order to supply the body with energy. A process called detoxification is the foremost argument presented by people in favor of fasting. Detoxification is a process the body normally does that involves neutralizing and eliminating toxins in the colon, liver, kidneys, lungs, lymph glands, and skin. When fasting, this process is sped up, because no food is entering the body. Elimination of these toxins is very healthy for the body, and can prolong life.

The second most health benefit of fasting is the healing process that your body goes through. While fasting, energy is diverted away from the digestive system due to lack of use, and goes towards the metabolism and immune system instead. Furthermore, production of protein for replacement of damaged cells is increased.

Finally, the most scientifically-backed health benefit is rejuvenation and an extended life expectancy. Everything mentioned already helps contribute to this benefit. A combination of a slower metabolic rate, more efficient protein production, a better immune system, and the increased production of hormones contribute to this long-term benefit of fasting. Along with the increased production rate of the Human Growth Hormone, the anti-aging hormone is also produced more efficiently.

Although debated by the scientific community, it has been proven that fasting increases some aspects of health. Fasting costs nothing except strength of will, and ends up saving you money and letting you live a longer and happier life in the long run.
