Can you trust the honesty of online dating site participants?
With the advent of the internet came the inevitable creation and personal discovery of online dating and the question arises; "can the honesty of online dating participants be trusted?" While online participation as a prelude to dating can be fun, there is neither reason nor basis to trust the information submitted by participants.
The most obvious reason for this observation is the fact that trust is a value that requires time and the experience of a hardcopy relationship to develop. Transactions that occur online are hardly more than exercises in blind trust. Blind trust is a romantic fantasy at best, an oxymoron at least and a potentially dangerous lapse in judgment at worst. Online personality profiles and email romance do not qualify as building blocks that lead to the development of a substantial trust.
A refresher course on the vast differences that separate virtual reality and actuality would go a long way toward qualifying a negative response to the question of trusting the honesty of online dating site participants. The role playing game of Dungeons and Dragons comes to mind for reasons not entirely understood, but it seems that online dating sites and romance is much like this fantasy game without the rules. Here, the reader is at liberty to fill in the blanks, but this at once suggests the possibility of a medium where candidates have the luxury of engaging extreme makeovers.
Online date services provide a titillating temptation to reinvent self with all of the necessary tools and conditions to make it happen. Participants are at liberty to become what they think others are looking for while they are also at liberty to become who and what they are looking for in themselves. When consideration is given to the popularity of myriad aids at our disposal, designed for the specific purpose of enhancing and providing misleading impressions about physical appearance, it would be monumentally naive to think it does not occur at the level of personality appearance as well; especially so with the added internet, sight unseen feature. This alone is sufficient grounds to cast a dubious cloud of skepticism over an internet approach to securing a meaningful relationship in general; an intimate, romantic relationship in particular.
