We have all heard the old saying "Don't let the bedbugs bite". This is much more than a saying, and an infestation of these tiny bugs means big trouble. Causing painful bites that are hard to heal, once they have made their way to your bed it is almost impossible to get rid of them. The best way to ensure bedbugs do not become a problem in your home is to prevent them before they start!
This starts with the outside of your home. Check for any cracks in the home's exterior and seal them immediately. Be sure all of the windows in your home are not in need of repairs as well.
Another great way to prevent bedbugs is to keep your home clean. Bedbugs thrive in dirty areas. Be sure to vaccuum your carpets regularly. Try to avoid piling clutter around as this serves as a great place for these bugs to nest. Also, be sure to dust your home.
If you are going to but items second hand, or have people who give you used items, be sure to wash clothes before you wear them. Put stuffed animals into a sealed garbage bag for one week before giving them to your children. If you are receiving used furniture, especially a mattress, thoroughly inspect them before use. If you suspect an item may be infested, your best option is to get rid of it; however, a pest control company may be able to help. Wrapping mattresses in a plastic covering will also prevent bedbugs from surviving.
Don't forget the pets! Bedbugs can also live on animals. If you suspect your animal has been in contact with bedbugs, a hot bath will kill most of the creatures.
Keep a small container of bug spray available in case you spot a bedbug. There are several products on the market designed specifically to treat bedbugs. If you notice one of these small, tick sized bugs, spray the area several times and allow to dry. Repeat the process.
Traveling means hotel stays, which means a greater chance of acquiring bedbugs. When stating in a hotel, you may want to consider bringing along a mattress cover, or plastic to cover. This will not prevent the bugs from getting on you, but will drop the chances considerably.
Finding the bugs early is the greatest prevention of all. Check your mattress, bed, and furniture regularly. Use a small flashlight and look on the headboard, crevices, and, any other dark places.
Following these steps will greatly reduce your chances of getting these annoying bugs in your home.
