Google Maps for mobile use has been a revolutionary application of the GPS navigation system, enabling users to get directions in one go. However as often happens with first-time technology applications, it had various functionality problems that are done away, with the all-new Beta version of Google Maps Navigation for Android 2.0 devices. It comes with the usual 3-D views, automatic rerouting and turn-by-turn voice guidance, with the added advantage of integrating the phone's Internet connection and GPS capabilities with Google mapping.
The launch of the new Droid series by Motorola has brought lifestyle gadgets to a whole new level altogether. It is incidentally, the first phone to run Google's brand new Android 2.0 operating system. With a high-resolution screen and a 854 by 480 pixel display, the Verizon Droid offers great viewing.
Rightly touted as the smart phone rivaling the iPhone, the Verizon Droid has more of a techie appeal, though it is relatively easy to use. Its seemingly innocuous look belies the amazing sharp 3.7 inch touch screen display. Use the tricky slider mechanism with caution though a slight nudge is sufficient o close it. The multi-touch touch interface requires a soft touch too. As you explore the Droid, you can customize the brightness, backlighting time, animations and home screen using widgets. At the same time, you have the option of turning off the feature that enables the accelerometer to adjust the orientation as you rotate the Droid. If you are already an Android user, it ought to be cool for you, except for the Droid specific couple of tweaks.
Equipped with the GPS or A-GPS, it offers a high-end application of Global Positioning System. You can have a voice-guided text to speech navigation directions using Google mapping technology. What's more? You do not need to pay a day use fee for LBS (Location Based Service) or sign up for a monthly subscription.
The best way to make optimum use of the Droid would be to buy a separate car mount at $30. Once 'cradled' the Droid will automatically display a navigation menu in a riveting high resolution.. You can then view a map, heed turn-by-turn directions while you navigate around looking for a business address or a camping zone. However, if you are not in the car, a feature called Car Home will give you the same features.
You can have the perfect satellite view, complete with Google Latitudes. If you wish to know the traffic data, it will give you the picture instantly.
The Google search option which is available on the gives you two options. The conventional method of searching by typing your search term or using the latest Google Voice to speak up the category or business name of your search. As the screen displays the results, you easily flip through the options like navigation and street view.
With all such possibilities and the World Wide Web at command, with browser interfaces supporting bookmark thumbnails, you can use the Verizon Droid for your travels, virtual peep into a desired location and as a local guide.
