The computer in the workplace and home has opened up new ways of doing work and communicating. Older people need to learn the basics of computing as a means to continue an active place in society.

Some older people need to look for a part job in order to supplement their retirement. There are only a few positions available where the computer is not used. Learning the basics of computing will help the older person obtain useful employment.

For some, you may find a way to earn a few dollars with the computer and the internet. This can be a lifesaver for those who cannot leave the house.

For the elderly person who cannot leave their home, the computer can be a means of keeping up with things that are going on around the world. Watching the news on television can be repetitious and you can find more facts on the web.

The internet can help elderly people do their grocery shopping, buy clothes, medicine, and other useful things that they need. The internet brings the world to them at a time when they would otherwise be feeling lost and alone.

Although nothing can take the place of human companionship, the internet can offer the feeling that you are still a part of the world. This is especially helpful for those who have been very active and find themselves in a position where they no longer can move around as they are accustomed to.

Communication is one of the most important reasons that the elderly should learn basic computing. Staying in touch with friends and family is so much easier with the internet. It is no longer necessary to write letters, buy stamps to send them, and wait weeks for a reply. Instant messaging and e-mail makes writing more convenient.

Cameras attached to the computer can make a phone call to your children, grandchildren, or other relative a more joyous occasion. The ability to see them as you are talking to them makes it more than worth learning the basics of computing.

There are games that can be opened up in your e-mail that you can actually play with your grandchildren. Imagine being thousands of miles away from each other and being able to play games with them!

Older people need to keep their minds busy. This helps to prevent Alzheimer's disease. Having access to books and articles keeps your mind active and alert. There are a million different games that can be played on the internet.

For those that like to learn, there are classes that can be taken over the internet. There are many classes that are geared towards the interest of older people.

The computer can keep you in touch with your physician. For those that need constant medical attention, the computer can help your doctor keep a closer watch on you, thus saving unnecessary trips to the doctor's office. It just may be a way to save your life!

The reasons for an older person to learn the basics of computing are many. In short, learning the basics of computing can keep an older person from being isolated from the world and could possibly be a way to save their life.
