I love this debate for the simple reason that these are two of my favorite characters, and their battles are well documented. I'd never heard of Wolverine till he was introduced to me in a Daredevil story. His ferociousness and intensity had me searching out his comic books and I was hooked.
First, lets take a good look at the combatants; Wolverine is the, not so obvious, good guy. Approximately five and a half feet tall, and weighing a deceaving 275 pds. due to his adamantium skeleton, he's armed with an almost unmatched ferocity and three eighteen inch claws that spring from the top of his hands at will. Next to the afore mentioned skeleton, Woverines biggest advantages are his enhanced healing powers and heightened senses, coupled with the strength and agility of a tiger. In addition he's a seasoned fighter who thinks and uses strategy in a battle.
Sabertooth is almost the direct opposite of Wolverine. He stands seven foot something and from the looks of him weighs a good 400 pds. His ferociousness is on the level of Wolverines, and his strength is off the charts, he picked up a car in one of their battles! Sabertooth has the same healing powers that his brother Wolverine possesses and uses it to his advantage. Knowing that he'll heal quickly, he thinks nothing of taking a shot that would cripple most so he can deliver a mortal blow to an opponent. Sabertooth doesn't posses the adamantium skeleton that Wolverine acquired when Colonel Stryker tricked him into a military experiment, but his biggest disadvantage is that he fights with a singlemindedness that often places him in spots that he cant get out of .
Anyone who has read the accounts of one of their many battles has noticed the banter between them. they know each other well, and both will go to extreme levels of violence to defeat the other. The fact that they are brothers doesn't seem to bring any compassion to the table. In fact, I believe this heightens the ferocity of their encounters, and causes each of then to go to levels that they wouldn't otherwise. But fortunately for us readers, something usually gets in the way of these battles. Or one will think that the other is vanquished , when that isn't the case.
Wolverine will always be the victor, simply because he thinks while he fights and doesn't let the heat of battle take over his mind.
