Karaoke is a great way to simulate the musical career that you never had. The beauty is that you don't even have to be good, and people will cheer for you, as long as you commit to the song. No one wants to watch some dude singing quietly, and not really moving. We all want to watch the guy sing his heart out, with hand gestures and hip shakes. Song choice is pretty important too. Here are some top choices for men.
Morning After, by Maureen McGovern: Guys like to sing girl's songs for comedic effect. Brittney Spears' "Hit Me Baby One More Time" was a big hit amongst men for a long time, because they thought it was funny. It might have been the first four-hundred times, but now it's just lame. We get it, it's so out of place for a big macho man to sing such a girly song. Instead, better performances come from classics which were sung by women, but didn't have to be. "Morning After" is a powerful and emotional song. Men can commit to it, make the same "out of place" joke, without hitting people over the head with it, and annoying them in the process. Also, Kahn, from King of the HIll sang this song in Karaoke, so fans of the show will appreciate the homage.
Enter Sandman, by Metallica: This comes from the other end of the spectrum. It's an easy enough song to sing, and it's just about guaranteed that someone will sing this song just about every night of karaoke. Men, it's up to you to be the one to do so. No offense to women, but they just can't do James Hetfield's voice right. Heavy songs don't usually go over well at Karaoke, but this one is so popular, and everyone can sing along, so it gets a pass.
Bust A Move, by Young MC: This is not a song for amateurs, though man amateurs do try. It's risky if you don't have it down. But when this song is done well, it is a huge hit every time. Rap, in general is a bad choice for Karaoke, but this one has enough pseudo-singing, plus, it is a well known classic song, therefore, like Enter Sandman, it gets a pass.
There is no wrong choice at Karaoke. For men, it is just important to be original, commit to the music choice, and try to avoid all the cliches. Happy singing.
