As wintry weather creeps in with its many challenges, it can make even the most cheerful person's thoughts feel as cold as ice. Add to that, a tough economy and living on a fixed-income, winter can look bare and bleak, indeed. However, here are a few suggestions that may help lighten the situation.
Since wisdom comes with age, you, no doubt, do not need a reminder to prepare your emergency kit in case of power outages due to storms. The same goes for your car, if you still own one. And, if you live in a home for seniors, management usually takes care of issues which may affect your residence. Let's take a look at some ways to cope, with Old Man Winter, knocking at the door.
ISOLATION:
The very nature of winter brings a measure of isolation to all of us. To combat that, we need to do the opposite, and that is to socialize. Many communities have senior citizen organizations in which to join. They do more than just "get together." They are some of the country's greatest do-gooders! Their combined wisdom is a huge asset and they also have fun! Generally, transportation can be arranged to help you meet with these groups.
Some seniors use what skills and talents they have gained by sharing with others. Whatever you are good at, share it. Everyone who learns something new, feels good about it. Likewise, enjoy learning from others. Despite the winter weather, your spirit does not have to be cold and lonely. You have a lot to offer....everyone does!
If you live in a gated community, there is usually a function room. If seniors are active in using it, join in. Many have pot-luck suppers, play cards, swap stories and make new friendships. If no one is making use of the function room, why not talk to management and get things going yourself! Not only will you feel good, you will be helping others to feel good too.
Are you in a position to own and care for a furry friend? Local animal shelters are always striving to find homes for these unfortunate friends. They need love and companionship, too. If you can't own one, offer to volunteer in keeping these friends socialized by petting and grooming them. Shelters do look for volunteers.
HEALTH:
If you have not had a regular physical in a while, now is the time to get one, before winter sets in. Having a thorough check-up, even though no one enjoys a trip to the doctor's, will accomplish two things. You will put the hearts and minds of those who love you at ease. Next, you can keep on top of health issues by addressing them
