My favorite city in the world is Toronto, Ontario, Canada. I started visiting there in 1990 and it has had a place in my heart ever since. I call it "my city of glass" because the majority of its tall buildings are covered in corner to corner glass that gleams and sparkles in the sun. The city is constantly growing and adding large condos and apartment structures on a daily basis. On every trip I make , I notice something new has been constructed on the city's horizon. Yet, the city remains vibrant and welcoming. Honestly, the one thing that surprised me more than anything on my first trip to the city is how absolutely clean it was. Rarely did I see trash in the streets or graffiti anywhere I went. Also, the native Torontonians are incredibly nice and friendly. I felt at home with the majority of the citizens I came into contact with. This is typical of my experiences with Canadians in general though; nice can almost be described as part of their genes.
Home to an enormous amount of immigrants, Toronto's diversity is prominent and well-established among the various neighborhoods and shopping areas around the city. Greek, Chinese, Italian, Polish, German...you name it and you will find a place there to encompass all walks of life and cultures.
Toronto is also home to major sport teams such as the Blue Jays baseball team, the Raptors basketball team and the Maple Leafs, their hometown hockey team and any visit to this fine city must include a stop at Rogers Centre (also known as SkyDome), Air Canada Centre and Maple Leaf Gardens to catch these teams in action.
For the tourist, Toronto prides itself on hospitality and enjoyment. Visit Casa Loma, Canada's most noted historical castle with its 5-acre estate full of gardens. The castle itself, once owned by Sir henry Pellatt is now open for public tours from May to October.
Also on the must see list is the CN Tower near Toronto's lake front. The world's tallest structure, standing at 1815 feet, boasts an internal elevator that places visitors near the top of the tower and affords a bird-eye view of the city and surrounding area for miles.
A ferry boat ride on Lake Ontario will lead you to the beautiful Toronto Islands. Originally a series of sand-bars, weather and the tide of Lake Ontario have, through the years, moved the land mass away enough to create sort of a cove between the islands and the city itself. The islands are home to a variety of birds and wild-life and in fact, a prominent human population of over 600
