Hanukkah crafts for kids

by Tasha Raymond

Created on: November 19, 2009

One thing that kids love to do is a make a mess with their hands. There's a way to make this productive, however. During Hanukkah, as with other holiday, there's a wonderful assortment of crafts that your kids can do to make the mess they want (albeit with some restriction), be creative, and keep entertained.

Hannukah Cards

Materials Needed
- Paper
- Scissors
- Crayons, markers, pencils, paint, etc.

- Glue
- String, sequins, glitter, fabric scraps, etc.

This form of card creating is a really simple one. All you have to do is make sure the paper gets folded to a size that can fit in an envelope and let the kiddos go at it! Letting them wander in their imagination and create the dreidel cards in any manner they please is something that is not only fun for them, but an interesting learning experience to see what your child can do artistically.

Hanukkah Mobile (Decoration)

Materials Needed
- Cardboard or construction paper
- Crayons, markers, color pencils
- Coat hanger
- String
- Hole punch

Directions
1. Have kids draw and cut out things that are associated with the holiday. These can be picture of gelt (money), menorahs, the Star of David, pictures fo the family together, their favorite food...anything that reminds them of the holiday.

2. Using the hole punch, punch a hole in the top if each picture. Use string to tie the picture to the coat hanger. Feel free to play with lengths and colors. Make sure to hang your Hanukkah mobile where everyone can see!

Stained Glass Dreidels

Materials Needed
- Poster board
- Scissors
- Clear contact paper
- Colored tissue paper
- Glue

1. Cut the poster board into 5 in x 7 in pieces. Fold a piece in half length wise. Draw half a dreidel along the fold and then cut along the outline. When you unfold the paper, you should have a full dreidel. Now, fold the drediel back along the same line. Cut out the inside of the dreidel so there is only a half inch dreidel outline or frame. Trace this on another piece of poster board to cut out your second dreidel piece.

2. Cut two pieces of contact paper large enough to fit your dreidel on. Lay a piece of the contact paper on a flat surface and remove the backing so that the sticky side is up. Place the dreidel frame on top of the sticky side and cut around the edges.

3. Decorate the sticky side of the contact paper using the confetti and tissue paper. Have fun and be creative with this part! Make sure to trim the tissue paper so that it's not hanging over the side of the frame.

4. Glue the other dreidel frame
