Creating holiday decorations by hand gives you more time to think and contemplate on the real meaning of Hanukkah than running out to the department store does. Since Hanukkah is a holiday of miracles, why not take time to be with one of the greatest miracles of all: your family. As with any holiday, one of the best ways to spend time with friends and family during Hanukkah is to create your own Hanukkah decorations. These decorations are delightfully cute and can be made with help of children of all ages.
Stained Glass Dreidels
Materials Needed
- Poster board
- Scissors
- Clear contact paper
- Colored tissue paper
- Glue
1. Cut the poster board into 5 in x 7 in pieces. Fold a piece in half length wise. Draw half a dreidel along the fold and then cut along the outline. When you unfold the paper, you should have a full dreidel. Now, fold the drediel back along the same line. Cut out the inside of the dreidel so there is only a half inch dreidel outline or frame. Trace this on another piece of poster board to cut out your second dreidel piece.
2. Cut two pieces of contact paper large enough to fit your dreidel on. Lay a piece of the contact paper on a flat surface and remove the backing so that the sticky side is up. Place the dreidel frame on top of the sticky side and cut around the edges.
3. Decorate the sticky side of the contact paper using the confetti and tissue paper. Have fun and be creative with this part! Make sure to trim the tissue paper so that it's not hanging over the side of the frame.
4. Glue the other dreidel frame onto this lovely little mess, making sure to line it up with the one on the sticky contact paper.
5. Now, peel of the backing of the second piece of contact paper and place it sticky side down
on top of your dreidel. Make sure that it covers the entire dreidel.
6. Trim the extra contact paper, hang up your dreidel, and enjoy!
