The state of Jon & Kate Gosselin's marriage

by Jane Kay

Created on: November 19, 2009

I know too much about this topic.

I'm actually slightly embarrassed to admit how much I know about this topic.

Generally speaking, I do not follow celebrity gossip or news. Sure, what's on the news, I end up reading about once or twice, but I rarely go out of my way to find the latest juiciness on celebrities; there's just too much to read out there to waste my time like that. The last time I was tuned into the latest regarding anyone famous was O.J. Simpson, and that proved to be an even greater waste of my time (not to mention a horrid realization that the justice system blows).

Enter: Jon and Kate - now everything's different.

With this incident, I actually did a Google search (okay, several times...) to find the latest tidbits about what was happening.

I was not an die-hard fan of the show. I have watched maybe 30% of the show, admittedly more after they developed problems, but I had a personal interest in this show from the start because I, like them, have multiples - twins, but not the sextuplets. (Praise God.) Sure, my twins are much older, but I recall those early days and how difficult it was; so to imagine 6 additional infants to two year old twins is rather astonishing to me. I felt for them, and would watch this couple, in love, going through a hard time but doing remarkably well. My heart would go out to them often, hoping they make it through the hardship and all eight kids grow up safely and happily.

But every three to four weeks when I would catch an episode, I couldn't help but notice how much "assistance" they were receiving; some from TLC, and some from random people in the public, but definitely, I began to notice that overall, their life with eight children was easier than a lot of people's lives with two children. (This, of course, doesn't take into fact the hardships of living with cameras in your home, but that's another issue altogether.)

Very gradually, albeit quite apparently - I could see Kate changing before my eyes.

The appealing thing about Kate as a TV persona, originally anyhow, was that she was quite pretty, blunt but rather hilarious, seemingly upfront, but undoubtedly in love with Jon. Jon was contrastingly different from Kate in that he was sweet, subdued, rather obedient though sometimes grumpy like a five year old, but obviously crazy about Kate. The dynamics of this couple appealed to all, I think, in that nobody hated them and everyone wished them well, regardless of whether they agreed that exposing their whole lives
