At the core of The Hollywood Film Industry is a money-fueled infrastructure. Citizens often forget that their dollars dictate what sells and what becomes popular. Many extremists blame media, movies and music for societal problems, and partly they are right, but when people stop pouring their hard earned money into bad examples, society can then begin to charge what's accepted. The only way Hollywood will change is if your wallet demands it to change. Just like any other trend, Hollywood fills the demands of the viewers paying to see movies.
While Hollywood has had it's standard uniform for decades now, a breakout star has come onto the scene and has shaken the perception of a Hollywood actor. In these rough times, drama and entertainment that depicts the pain and sorrows of the world has become more popular than comedies or light-hearted films. When you get a chance, take a look at Academy Nominations; mostly drama-laced films.
Many movie viewers have become very critical of what's on the screen.More and more people are demanding movies filled with drama and pain from another's life perspective. Just like high school, people have conditioned themselves to appreciate another's pain. When someone else is experiencing sorrow, whether on channel nine news or on the movie screen, people feel 'uplifted' because they may be in a 'better' situation.
Hollywood is known for glitz and glamour, exploited relationships, and public outcries of attention. In 2009, a movie "Precious" has changed the norm in what's accepted on the screen. Who would have thought that overweight black women can be put on a movie screen and people are filling theaters, paying to see it? This is not a jab at overweight or black women, but it points out that the country's obsession with another's sorrow has broken down the barrier of what's normal for Hollywood. The American dollar has made a star of someone who would be otherwise overlooked walking down a street.
Hollywood can change and it will change, when people demand it with their dollars. People are wising up and realizing that everyone has a story to tell. Not just the pretty faces that litter our magazines and nightly news, but regular people who wake up everyday to tackle life. With the right people speaking up, media consumers are realizing their dollar power. Hollywood can clean up its act as far as integration and stereotypes, but as far as sex and violence, sorry people that's here to stay. Whether the economy is good or bad, left or right, people will pay to see sex and violence. But then again, if the dollars demand something else, it will change: It's modern society.
