How to dress children for playing outdoors in winter

What child doesn't want to play outside in the snow? It's one of the highlights of winter and for most adults, the memories of playing outside in the snow are often cherished and reflected back on each year.

Hypothermia and frostbite are very real conditions that can be life threatening and can come on quickly without warning. Dressing your child appropriately can be not only save them from these conditions but allow them to enjoy their time outside.

So, what is the best way to dress your child?

In the Snow:

1. Layering.

This is the number one way to keep warm and insulated. Have a pair of long thermal underwear or tights for the legs, warm pants or even better snow pants that keep water from seeping through and warm socks.

For the upper body, a thermal undershirt is great with another shirt over that along with a sweater. A turtleneck shirt is also good at keeping the neck area warm.

2. Outer wear.

A coat that is water resistant works best. Once the clothing gets wet, it's very hard to stay warm. Using water resistant coats are best for playing in the snow and keeping moisture out.

Boots are also important and most snow boots are water resistant. You can even place a plastic bag over the foot, before putting the boot on. Be careful about tucking the pants inside the boot. That could make it easier for the snow to fall inside.

Take a warm scarf and wrap it around the neck area and chest and tuck in to the coat.

3. Head covering.

Warmth tends to be lost mostly from the head and ears. A warm hat that covers the ears is the best way to prevent heat loss. The best choice is earmuffs, warm hat and then a hood from the jacket.

4. Hands.

Water resistant gloves are important here since most kids will be playing in the snow with their hands. If they are wearing knit mittens or gloves they will get wet right away and your child could get frostbite very quickly, plus make playing uncomfortable.

Playing outside without snow.

1. Layering.

Use the principles listed above. The layering really keeps the child insulated.

2. Outer wear.

Without the worry of the wet snow, you can wear any heavy coat, however one with a hood is best for added protection and warmth.

Shoes or boots are fine but a pair of tights and socks or two pair of socks for the layering will keep the feet warmer.

A scarf to keep the neck and chest area tucked in to the coat should be worn.

3. Hands.

Mittens or knit gloves are ok since they won't be getting wet but many of the knits do not provide the same level of warmth the snow gloves do.

4. Head.

Again, wet or dry, it's very important to keep the head and ears warm. Earmuffs, hat and hood are best.

When outfitting your child it's important to make sure they are wearing clothing that not only keeps them warm but that they can move in and they are comfortable in. Hats and gloves that aren't comfortable may be removed by your child so they can play easier and more comfortably.

The most important things to remember are the layering, keeping the head, ears and feet warm and during snow play, keeping your child as dry as possible. By taking the time before your child goes out doors to insure they are dressed appropriately you are keeping them safe and allowing them to have fun.
