Health benefits of psyllium husk

Known in India as Isphagula, "Plantago psyllium" or "Plantago isphagula" in Latin, this herb is famous for its use as a stool softener. It is the husk of the seeds that one can find the dietary supplement one is looking for. It is said that in every 100 gm of this herb one would find at least 71 gm of fiber which remains the most in any fibrous variety other that oats in our day to day life.

Psyllium and Bowel:

This herb has been known for a long time for its action on bowel moments of a person. Psyllium fibers are known to absorb a lot of water thus softening the stools. In a way it remains a boon to all people who suffer from constipation.

On the other hand this same herb has been used to treat diarrhoea form mild to medium cases. The fibres of this herb show bulking action and thus relieves diarrhoea.

Bloating and flatulence are some of the other symptoms which get cured if this herb is used.

Psyllium and Ulcerative colitis and other diseases:

In a recent study conducted comparing this herb and another prescribed medication, namely mesalamin for Ulcerative colitis, it was recorded that this herb if used decreases the recurrence of attacks of ulcerative colitis. More effective than the prescribed medication.

Psyllium and Proctology:

This herb is a very special herb for all those clients who suffer from anal fissures and haemorrhoids. Normally the action of this fibre makes the stool soft and bulky a little bit, making the passage of the stool easy. Being demulcent this herb increase the softness of the stool thus reducing pain and discomfort for all those who suffer from different proctological diseases.

Psyllium and Obesity:

The magic work of reducing the appetite without over stimulating the nervous system makes this herb in the recent times an ideal choice for obesity clients. If taken just few hours before meals, one might notice hunger decreased due to the intake of this herb.

Psyllium and Cholesterol:

Recent studies published in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition have shown Psyllium to be effective in lowering total as well as LDL [bad] cholesterol levels. Thus this herb is proven a blessing for all those who suffer with hypercholesterolemia.

It is important even if this herb is a safe herb to use; still one should not use this herb if having any kind of obstructive condition of the abdominal wall. It is still not known if this herb is good for diabetic people to take.
