"Mom, we're bored!"
A statement heard by many mothers and said by children all over the world during these dark, cold wintry months. Keeping your children occupied and busy and un-bored can often be a daunting task for parents. But it doesn't have to be. There are some fun activities you can do with your children that will not only occupy their time, but allow you to keep your sanity as the day wears on.
1.) Winter window painting: Okay I know you are saying - huh? We are going to paint the windows? Yep you got it. Go to your local craft store and pick up some washable window paints, a painters mat, some brushes, stencils and let the fun begin! Kids love to paint, at any age and what could be more fun then allowing your children to paint Santa or a snowy scene on their bedroom window for all their friends to see.
2.) Indoor picnic with a movie: This is one of my favorite things to do with my boys. Lay a blanket on the floor, some pillows, make some cheesy nachos (filling) for an early supper, some popcorn and treats and press play on the dvd machine. You will be amazed at how calm, relaxed and enjoyable your kids can be when you are giving them your time, a snuggle and watching a movie together.
3.) Have some Craft Fun and make presents: Christmas is about giving and with November a month before the big day, there is no better way to spend the day indoors when it's too cold to go outside than making Christmas crafts and presents for others. There are two places I go to for ideas online. Mister Maker, one of the best arts and crafts shows for preschoolers and teachers, parents and kids of all ages. And Martha Stewart Kids is another fabulous resource to gain ideas on what to make and keep your kids busy for hours!
4.) Toy Recycle: At Christmas time I often find my kids rooms chalk filled with toys they don't play with anymore. Some are brand new, others broken. Spend the day going through the toys with your kids. Get them to pick out the ones they don't play with anymore to donate to a children's organization or your local shelter for needy kids, Salvation Army or Boys and Girls Club pick up. This will make your children feel better, knowing they are helping others and plus you get them to clean out their rooms of junk and broken toys.
5.) Word Games: It might seem silly but like playing eye spy, word association games can be tons of fun. One person starts and says cake, the other says something associated with that word like (icing) (batter) (yummy) and so forth. There are no wrong answers and everyone is a winner! It's also a great way to teach your toddlers site words.
