You are trapped in your car. You have no way to contact anyone. It's cold and snowing outside so badly you can barely see through the windshield. This scenario, although rarely happens, does in fact happen to many motorists while traveling on the roads and one of the best things you can do to prevent this nasty situation from becoming worse is to be prepared and don't panic.
You've seen them in the stores, first aid kits, car kits for travelers that come in bundles. They range in price from $15.00 to $100. But how do you know which one is right for you and what you will need? That depends on your situation. Are you trapped alone? Do you have children? Do you have an animal with you?
All of these questions only you can answer as a driver and they will help you to decided the best and most suitable road side assistance package for you to build and keep in your car in case of emergency.
Here are a few items to think about:
Water - a supply of water for thirst. The body can survive on water without food for up to over a week when trapped in an isolated area while waiting for help. Fill a four liter jug with clean water and keep it in the trunk of your car. Add a couple of Styrofoam cups and you are good to go.
Blanket - Keeping warm won't be easy if you are stuck out in the cold. You cannot use the heat in your vehicle unless your vehicle is running and if you are stuck that will most likely be difficult. You can pick up thermal blankets with hot packs inside of them for as cheap as $50 at Canadian Tire or other local hardware stores. You simply pop open the blanket, break the bags inside and instant heat! These blankets are bound to keep you warm for up to eight hours while you wait for help to arrive. (If you have children) make sure you have enough for every member traveling. At least three so you can share.
Flashlight - Being trapped in your car on the side of the road at night can be well - scary at times. Having a flashlight will not only alert other travelers to you whereabouts, but allow you to see what you need to see while stuck in the car. (Make sure) you have ample supply of batteries with you for back up just in case.
First Aid Kit - Okay it's rare someone will actually be injured while stranded in their car during a storm or bad weather. But it does happen. You skid off the road, smack your head on the steering wheel or cut yourself by accident. A first aid kit with the basic essentials, gauze, band-aids, tape etc... will give you some peace of mind.
