How to dress for outdoor activities in winter

It may seem simple, especially to those of us who grew up in cold weather regions, to know how to dress for cold weather, but not everyone knows what is appropriate in what types of cold. The following tips can help you stay warm when the weather is biting.

Layers - The best way to keep warm in the coldest winter weather is to dress in layers. Layers act as insulation keeping you warm even when the winter wind is whipping. But what to layer? On the coldest days or days when you'll be outside for long periods of time, start with thermal underwear - also known as long-johns. These skin-tight undies will fit under anything and keep you warm and toastie. Next a t-shirt and sweat pants are best second layers, followed by a sweatshirt or fleece under your warm winter jacket. To keep your legs layered, wear long wool socks pulled up high over your long-johns under your sweat pants.

Cover your head - A winter hat is a must. Most of your body heat escapes through your head so wearing ahat forces your body to absorb that heat. This is why a hat is better in the cold than a headband or earmuffs. A knit hat or a hat of wool are the best options. If your hat does not cover your ears, ear muffs fit nicely over a snug winter cap.

Use a scarf or neck warmer - These handy items will help keep your neck and face out of the winter wind. If you have a hat that pulls down into a mask, you may not need a scarf for your face, but a neck warmer will still help.

Don't forget your hands - Wear your gloves or mittens. If you are going to be needing your hands free, invest in a pair of mittens with top that fold back to reveal your fingers beneath; this way you can stay warm, but still use your hands if you must. For added warmth snap open a hand warmer pack - available in ski shops - and slip them into your gloves. These last for hours and your hands won't even notice the cold.

Wear boots - Even if it's not snowing, boots will keep your feet warm. If there is snow on the ground, they will also keep your feet dry.

Whether you're headed out for a day on the slopes, a football game, or just some wintery family fun, remember to bundle up and don't let the cold ruin your fun.
