"This has to be done," the young man says packing a few shirts into an old Army duffle bag. He moves quickly around the room, grabbing articles of clothing and a few extra items for the road. The road, he kept thinking to himself. He didn't even know where the hell he was going, but here he was.
"No," says the young girl following him around, "this is insane. What are you going to do?"
"I don't know yet," he says hastily shoving in one pair of pants, then another. "I'm just rolling with this feeling." Moving to the night stand he looks over a few things and sighs. "This is pretty crazy."
"Then don't go," she says walking up to him with tears in her eyes. Putting her hand on his chest she lays her head just above his heart.. and closes her eyes. He smiles and strokes her hair.
"This thing, whatever it is, is pulling me away from here," he says still stroking her hair while she listens to his heart beat. Lowering his head his lips just touch the top of her head, "and you.. which is killing me," he says as a lone tear goes down his face, "but I have been going crazy trying to figure out what I had to do. There's no work around here, and you're carrying my child," he says pulling her face back to meet his. "I will not have either one of you cold and hungry."
"We have money to last us a while," she says trying to talk him out of it.
"You have enough food and money to take care of the two of you for a while," he says rubbing her belly, "and the car is full of gas."
"You don't have to.." she says welling up with tears. He walks up to her, puts his arm around her, and kisses her head.
"You know I do," he says calmly. "This isn't saying goodbye, it's saying do what you have to and get yourself home."
"You'd better," she says half crying and laughing. "This child needs a Father."
"He'll have two," the man says kissing her on the lips. He slings his bag over his arm and walks out into a clear cool night. On the road.. to seek his destiny.
