How to find free and cheap children's activities for weekends

Finding free and cheap activities for kids does not have to be a long and tedious , or even a difficult process. You can begin by contacting the school district in which you live. Even if they do not offer programs themselves, they may be able to help guide you in the right direction.

Starting a online search using the phrase "Free or cheap activities for children" and then inserting the name of your town or a nearby area can be fruitful, but if you live near a large metro area, it can also be a longer process than necessary, depending on the number of results. For example, if you enter that phrase and the metro area where my family lives, you get a return of over seven hundred thousand entries, and the first pages all feature locations that are on the far side of the metro area, which is quite a drive, and would require an extended period of time in rush hour traffic, not something most people find an enjoyable experience. The day would be much more fun if half the time you are not stuck in a vehicle.

Try searching for a website for your own town, as a lot of towns have a website set up for their residents. Look for activities listed on that site first, as it may be easier to locate something not far from your home, that doesn't require a lot of driving, little gas expenditure and you might even run across people you already know and would enjoy spending time with.

If you are affiliated with a church or a parenting group, and wish to spend more time with people you know you have things in common with, check with them and see if they have any activities they sponsor. If they don't, then consider contacting the parents you know the best and ask them if they wish to start an activity group. There are a lot of places, such as museums, zoos, aquariums and so on that offer group discounts, and they often times do not require you to have an official school or church affiliation to participate in the group discount, provided you have a group of a particular size.

If organizing a group is not the thing for you, or if you don't have a large group of people you can or want to get together, then ask a few friends who have kids around the same age if they would like to pool resources for activities for the kids. Other parents may have ideas for fun things to do that you are unaware of, or connections to finding out more information. Don't be afraid to ask other parents for assistance. It could lead to deeper friendships for both your child and for you.
