Nostalgia and tradition make Thanksgiving meals special. Many people have duplicated family menus, or passed down recipes for generations. For the last ten years, I've made a cranberry, apple, oatmeal conserve that has been a classic side dish at all of our Thanksgiving celebrations.
A friend gave me this recipe with the promise that it would be a hit at any meal. She was right! The cranberry, apple, oatmeal conserve is delicious as well as easy (no kidding) to make. Another plus is that this simple to make side dish can be served with the meal or as a desert. The flexibility of the dish helps balance out the menu and flavors of your Thanksgiving feast, or any meal you serve.
Have fun making this recipes. It's sure to become a favorite with your family and friends.
CRANBERRY, APPLE, OATMEAL CONSERVE
Ingredients:
1 Cup Raw Oatmeal
1/2 Cup Flour
1 Cup Light Brown Sugar
1 Stick of Butter, Melted
1 Can Sliced Pie Apples
1 Can Whole Berry Cranberry Sauce
1 Tspn Cinnamon
Directions:
Pre-heat Oven - 350
Time - 1-1/2
Servings: 6-8
In a bowl, mix oatmeal, flour, sugar and butter for the crust
In a second bowl, combine apples, cranberry sauce, cinnamon for crust
Place one-half of the crust mix into pie in all of the filling
Sprinkle the remaining with remaining crust mixture
Place in pie plate onto a cookie sheet and into the oven
The dish will boil copiously when done - if it's not bubbling, it's not done
Do not double this recipe
This dish is excellent with poultry, and it's a fabulous dessert. For a special touch, when served as a dessert, add a scoop of French vanilla bean ice cream or homemade whipped cream.
You'll be amazed at how simple, yet wonderful your "soon to be traditional" Thanksgiving side dish will be for you to create. Sit back and wait for the thanks you're sure to get.
