Taking a vacation doesn't have to be something we just dream about, in fact, if you plan ahead and use just a few of the tips below you will, a vacation is something most of us can afford.
1. Time of the year.
By traveling off-season, you can save as much as 75% off the regular prices on most resorts, airfare and cruises. Most vacation destinations are priced based on demand and while the demand is down, so then are the prices.
Although there are some exceptions, a good rule of thumb is to travel during the school year when most families cannot get away. Take a 7-night cruise for example. During the summer a room with a view may cost $900.00 per person compared to the week or two before Christmas, where the price can be as low as $250.00 per person.
2. Food
Food can be a huge expense but with careful and creative planning you can save a lot of money here. Many restaurants offer breakfast specials or early bird dinners that can save you as much as 50%. Investigate the area before you arrive to see what restaurants are in the area and what deals they may be offering.
Bring snacks with you at the hotel including drinks. If the hotel room has a kitchen, plan to have some of the meals at your hotel and shop at the local grocery store.
3. Hotels and lodging
Sometimes you can save as much as 50-60% by staying off the strip, main area or a block away from the beach.
Some hotels offer concierge level offering free snacks and drinks during the week, check out the hotel and see if they offer this and how much more that room would be. The savings on the daily snacks and drinks, especially for families may make it worth it.
4. Use public transportation
Many resort areas offer convenient public transportation, which saves on gas and parking.
5. Entertainment
Research the area in advance to look for sightseeing options and other entertainment ideas that won't cost a lot of money.
Look for online coupons for parks and other area attractions.
6. Number of days and days of the week.
Many hotels offer discounts if you stay for a minimum number of days or include weekend stays when they need more business. Check out different promotions offered by the hotels and sometimes calling the hotel directly can save you money.
7. Other discounts
Some hotels, resorts and packages offer discounts based on age, the state you live in and if you are in a union or in the military. You won't know unless you ask.
If you plan ahead and decide in advance areas that you want to spend the most money on and save on the other areas you will find that saving money on vacation is not only possible but easy to do.
