We spend a large part of our lives at work and it would be such a miserable, depressing state of affairs if we could not enjoy some aspects of working for a living. The work itself is important; it can give a sense of achievement, as well as earning the money needed to live. The most vital element for creating that enjoyment has got to be the people we work with. If we cannot get along with them, then going to work will become a stressful, soul-destroying experience. Which is why it is very important to know how to create good working relationships.
Honesty demands that you admit that you cannot like everybody you work with. There are probably some, shall we call them "unkindred spirits"? who irritate the pants off you. But if you really want a smooth, pleasant working life, you need to accept them, warts and all, to create those good working relationships. Your aim is to reduce their annoyance factor and just get along with them. Tolerance, courtesy and patience are the keys to achieving this. While you are absorbing that fact, you might consider your own little idiosyncrasies that make you a pain for somebody. Nobody's perfect.
Hold onto that thought at work. It is the cornerstone for creating good working relationships. To put it into practice is easier than you might think. Use a smile and a warm greeting with everyone. Ask how they are doing, how the work is going, is the family OK. Ask these questions with a real, sincere interest in the answers. It doesn't take long, but it warms people, makes them feel valued and part of the team.
Never be afraid to offer help, in a tactful, cooperative way. Involve your colleagues in fun activities as well as work issues. This is a great "lead by example" strategy that will really help bring about good working relationships and a better atmosphere at work.
Never get embroiled in office politics, gossip or vendettas. Not only does this destroy working relationships, but it kills team work and productivity. People get hurt, and hurt people fight back in defense. Diffuse negativity with honest enquiry and humor. Be a peacemaker, not a vigilante.
Never try to be the boss's pet, or pass moans and gripes up the line on your own. Instead, bring issues out in the right forum of staff meetings or staff suggestions. Always try to be open and honest, and supportive of co-workers when the need arises.
Never bring your personal problems to work, or at least, don't involve your colleagues in them. You might have one or two special friends at work that you would confide in, but confine yourself to them.
In conclusion, it is not so difficult to create good working relationships if you treat everybody with tolerance and respect, stay away from gossip and factions, and remain helpful, open and honest. That way, going to work can be fun and not something to approach with dread, which is great, considering how much of your life you spend there.
