Reiki, a Japanese form of stress reduction and relaxation, has been attributed to the late Dr. Mikao Usui. His discoveries and teachings are still closely protected today, and taught with the utmost respect.
Reiki, is a combination of two Japanese words. Rei which means God's wisdom or Higher Power and ki which means life force energy. The energy of the client is addressed by a trained practitioner to allow for healing and strengthening the aura, or energy field that surrounds every living creature. There have been many accounts of instantaneous healings and miraculous recoveries in addition to the more common results of Reiki. This therapy has been used for a large modality of reasons, including easing stress, relieving pain, helping to treat physical ailments, and helping to address and eliminate emotional issues. The reaches of its help can go far beyond what the client may expect, and even see the benefits in other areas of his or her life.

Depending on the practitioner, he may chose to gently lay his hands on the client in the more charged areas to help direct energy to the issue. However, it is not necessary to actually touch, as it is believed the energy is being addressed, and not necessarily the physical body itself. There are many practitioners that strictly stay above the body in the aura itself.
