As the cold sets in and the days get shorter, our thoughts turn inwards and contemplative. Fashion's response to the deepening days is a darker, more somber color palette, a palette that reflects the turning of the season, the melancholy light of winter, the natural changes all around us and the lengthening shadows in the urban landscape.
Shades of black
Utterly chic and always in vogue, black dominated the runways of Marchesa, Louise Vuitton and Dolce & Gabbana. Almost every catwalk showed at least one outfit in black. The juxtaposition of black and white resulted in graphic, bold shapes, tempered with tints of grey. This in-between shade offers a respite from the seriousness of black, ranging from dark steel grey to the silvery grey of light on water. Perfect as the basic shade to build your capsule wardrobe from, grey works well with any outfit or for any occasion.
Liquid silver
Metallics and liquid-like material in silver or light gold work well on all skin tones, highlighting and uplifting tired shadows. Silver, in particular, is on-trend this winter, and can be found in studs, accents, tassels on outfits. Futuristic and uber cool, this color has found its way onto bags and shoes as well as dresses and tops.
Forest browns and greens
Dark, rich and warm tones are a perennial favourite over the winter months. This winter, a return to roots mean that olive green and chocolate browns are popular. Donna Karen and Etro both showcased a simple, classic aesthetic, realised in sumptuous cuts and fabrics, dressed in velvety, mossy colors. These colors evoke a country, outdoorsy feel and is best expressed in natural fabrics such as silk, suede and wool.
Classic neutrals
A knock-on effect from last year's recession, the colors for winter 2010 are subdued and understated. Champagne, ivory, warm honey tones and slate can be combined for a classy, elegant winter look. Pastels, traditionally reserved for the spring months, are all grown up now. Worn with gothic touches, pastels can hold their own against the richer, less subtle hues of winter.
Iridescent hues
The duality of light and dark that is the focus on winter is expressed in jewel-like, iridescent colors this season. Alternatively dark then bright when the fabric catches the light, shades of royal purple, peacock green and ruby red inject life, color and joy into drab winter wardrobes. Perfect for parties and after hour cocktails, these winter hues speak of dark glamour and sophistication.
