The latest news at this date, November 27, 2007 shows there were no adverse effects caused by the distribution problems faced with distribution of the H1N1 virus. Safety was never compromised. Thus far no adverse effects have been reported. The biggest problem faced in distributing H1N1 vaccine having enough to go around, is also being solved. Up to the present - 11-15-09. Many are turned away form distribution sites. That is changing, according to the most recent news headlines. Clinic fails to distribute all its doses of vaccine Des Moines Register (Iowa). Of the 4,000 doses available, only 1,179 were used. H1N1 SHOTS: More adults eligible for injectable vaccine: Those with medical conditions up next reported Las Vegas Review Journal, 11/11/09.
Prioritizing, pregnant women, infants up to 6 months and adults caring for the, health care workers, the age 6 months up to 24 and then ages 25 to 64 for adults with diseased conditions, has had its share of complaints. These will lessen when more vaccine is made available. The Las Vegas Review Journal shows that with most of the first critical groups already having been vaccinated; now those with compromising medical conditions will be able to get their vaccinations. This is not the situation in other locations, however.
Flu of any variety takes it toll and those most vulnerable, of any age, the elderly, those with debilitating or potentially debilitating diseases, are its most likely victims. These are the first to line up for regular season vaccines. The same this year, yet this season the unwelcome flu virus is twofold, likewise making for additional problems with controlling the either or variety viruses.
Another complaint frequently heard among the elderly, many of whom fail to understand the exact reasons the H1N1 is initially being denied to them, is they are being overlooked. Of course that is not so. The reasoning behind these rules is sound decisions based on careful research and observations. Swine flu has been around before. Records show that. The reasons most older people have had the disease before and already have the antibodies against it in their bodies. It is natural and logical that this group should be the last in line for the vaccine. Probably in another month there will be available vaccine for this group- my guess. At least for the most vulnerable and frail.
Another problem with initially having enough to go around is the time it takes to prepare the vaccine. It is no easy job. It simply cannot be run off an assembly line rapidly. And because of that there have been no problems with the vaccine's effectiveness and it is comparatively safe. And yet the rumors grow louder that all is not right and there is preferential treatment among the rich and powerful.
One headline from The Business Insider shouts Democrats Plan Hearing on Wall Street's Preferential Access to H1N1 Vaccine.
What is that all about? Supposedly some at Goldman Sach's received vaccine before some hospitals did and this tidbit of information or misinformation - I don't know which - has been multiplying and keeping pace - or spun out of control - with the troublesome virus the vaccine is supposed to eradicate.
Wrong doing is wrong doing wherever it happens, and to get to the truth, US lawmakers are taking these 'last straws' of controversy over who is to get the vaccine and in what order, to the hill for a hearing. We will simply have to wait and see what they discover. And yet, amidst the rumors and out cries, there is still lack of the vaccine in some heavily populated places. It's my bet we have yet to see a beginning to an end of H1N1 vaccine problems, or the true or false yarns it has spun.
