Most of the adult population in the world suffer from gum related diseases and out of which one of the frequent complaints made by them is 'gum bleeding'. The symptoms may occur either spontaneously or more often at times of brushing the teeth. But, if the underlying problem is a chronic event, the gum bleeding will be preceded by other signs such as swelling, softening and discolouration of gums.

Among the causes which can give rise to gum bleeding, gingivitis or inflammation of the gums take the centre stage. Apart from this, disruption to the clotting mechanisms such as low platelet counts and clotting factor deficiencies can also trigger an event of gum bleeding. Local trauma can also result in this condition and might not be associated with any underlying pathology.

When searching for factors that might lead to increase susceptibility for gum bleeding, a frequently emphasized fact would be poor oral hygiene. Plaque formation, build up of bacteria, inflammatory response, soften gums and bleeding seems to be the sequel that follows unhygienic practices with regard to oral cavity. The persons who have unhealthy gums will be more susceptible to show signs of bleeding in other types of underlying disease states as well.

Therefore, how can we prevent this condition?

In order to do this, following measures are useful and if adhered in addition to the prevention of gum bleeding, you would be able to prevent losing your teeth as well.

1. Brush and floss your teeth after each meal

Brushing and flossing the teeth and gums after each meal would definitely be advantageous in maintaining healthy gums and thus avoid bleeding. Although it seems little impractical, a person should at least try to brush their teeth twice a day in the morning and before bed time and at the same time floss at least once a day.

Using proper toothpaste will facilitate this activity and special preparations are available for different gums and it's wise to take advice from your oral care expert.

2. Eat healthy foods

Avoiding sugars as much as possible and especially in the night after brushing the teeth, will effectively reduce the plaque formation and thus the initiation of a gingivitis process. Apart from this, a person should add adequate amounts of fruits into their diets as vitamins will make the gums more healthy and resistant to gum diseases.

Smoking, betel chewing and heavy use of carbonated drinks will make the person more susceptible to develop gum diseases and should be avoided as much as possible.

3. Inspect your gums and teeth by a dentist at least yearly

This will prevent the development of gum diseases as the doctor will be able to clean the oral cavity and if necessary scrape the plaques which are already formed.

4. Rinse the mouth using a oral solution

Using an approved oral solution will prevent the bacteria from growing in the mouth and thus the susceptibility of the gums to give rise to bleeding.

5. Avoid trauma to the gums

Using an appropriate tooth brush and avoiding inserting foreign objects with the intention to clean the gums will prevent such trauma and thus the resulting gum bleeding.
