If there's one place children like to be during the winter, it's outside. On the same note, if there's one thing their parents worry about, it's how to keep them warm while they're out there. Dressing children for outside play during the winter doesn't mean you have to bundle them up so tightly they can't move. The objective is to keep them warm, and depending on the weather, there are a few different ways to go about it.

The most important thing is to keeping your children warm is to keep them dry. A snow suit made of waterproof material is ideal for this. Snow suits come in one or two pieces. Choose a suit that your child is most comfortable in. If the temperatures are in the single digits, or it's windy, be sure they are wearing at least two layers of clothing underneath the suit as well.

Two shirts and a pair of pants with either long johns or a pair of leotards will work well. Wool is always a good choice when it comes to the fabric because it holds the warmth and resists moisture. This is especially true for socks. One pair of wool socks will work well. If using cotton socks, it's safer to go with two pairs. If the temperature is relatively warm, one layer of clothing under a snow suit will suffice.

Snow boots are a must, and these should be made of a waterproof or water resistant material as well. Pull on boots with no laces will be most effective in keeping moisture out. Tuck your child's pant legs into the boots if there is enough room, but it's not a necessity as long as they're wearing a snowsuit. Sneakers just aren't practical in the snow.

Your child should have a hat and a pair of gloves as well. A wool hat for really frigid temperatures and a cotton one for not-so-cold days is affective. If gloves/mittens are not waterproof, keep an extra pair readily available, and change your child's gloves when they become wet. If it is really windy or cold, bundle your child up with a scarf and consider having them wear a face mask.

Some children are exceptionally sensitive to the cold and will develop welts on their skin if it's exposed to the elements. Take extra care if your child suffers from such a condition. Always monitor your children while they play outdoors in the winter. If they become wet or cold, bring them indoors, dry them off, and warm them up. Be sure they are wearing dry gear before they go outside again.

When your children want to head outdoors this winter, don't worry too much about them getting cold. Follow these tips and dress them accordingly.
