What men should know is that women want to be treated like queens on our birthdays, though we'll never say it out loud this is the one day we want to be doted upon.

When it comes to buying your girlfriend a present the most important thing to do is listen. Why? Because she already knows that as a male you're never going to be able to figure out what she really will love, but she's not blatantly going to give you a list like she's writing to Santa Claus either.

So what women do is drop hints in the weeks leading up to their birthdays.

For example, if she wants to go out for dinner somewhere specific she may say"Oh, it's been such a long time since we went to that little place where we had that really wonderful pasta with our friends" or "I'd really love to go do / try *activity*one day."

Boys, take note; if your woman says something like this leading up to her birthday remember it and make a booking - she will not only love that you've listened but that you've actually surprised her by taking her exactly where she wanted to go without her directly telling you.

The same goes with presents. Have you noticed attentive women always give their man something he loves or has wanted all year? It's because they take notes during the year of what their man likes and dislikes, he may forget it later and is thrilled when it turns up as his birthday gift.

The same goes for women, if you know what your partner is interested in, what she likes and doesn't like you are half way to winning the battle, so ask her things throughout the year.

Look at the cosmetics and perfumes she uses and whether they're getting close to being finished then write down the brand and style and do her a favour by re-stocking her luxury items. You will not go wrong as long as you know she hasn't already done so.

Another winning birthday gift is to go out of your way to do something that you'd never really do for her or with her normally. The reason behind this is because with most women it truly is the thought that is the most important thing.

If she usually makes you breakfast in bed and does the house work give her a break and do it for her instead; add a little heart by writing her a love poem or sentiment if you are not romantic.

If you go out of your way and do something which it isn't your normal character she will always cherish that you've done something especially for her.

Another rule to follow is to never buy anything practical unless she has given you clues that it is exactly what she
