Finding your body mass index (BMI)

There is something that we must understand first and foremost. BMI is not a very accurate depiction in todays world. You need look no further than any fitness enthusiast magazine. Men and women of gargantuan stature that weigh in excess of 300 pounds with as little as 4 to 7 percent bodyfat. Based upon their height to weight ratios, which is how BMI is calculated, they would be classified as morbidly obese. The world has and always will change. Standards will be forgotten and replaced. Fads will flourish, fizzle, and then surely fade. The bottom line is this; BMI does not factor in a persons lean body mass or how much muscle mass is accounted for in the person's weight. Although this still is widely used among many, if not all of todays top personal training assessments, there are much more effective ways to calculate body-fat. BMI is slowly becoming less credible as we move forward in the fitness revolution. We must all understand that as training techniques and supplements continuously evolve, the standards by which we measure ourselves must also acclimate to meet those changes. If body fat is a legitimate concern of your, please do yourself a favor and have skin-fold testing done which will be a much more true assessment of where you currently are in you fitness goals.

You can do this either by girth measurements(simply using a tape-measurer), or with skin calipers which actually pinch the skin in certain sites where the body is conditioned to store fat, and you will be surprised as to how skewed the BMI actually is.
