Poetry: If I lose you

by Leonard Dabydeen

Created on: November 15, 2009

IF I LOSE YOU

When the brink of a quiet night

begins to fade

as the sun heralds a new day

with shimmering orange glow

in the wide, wide open skies

and flocks of black birds converge

on seemingly endless lines of electrical wires

suspended on tapered lantern posts

across busy city streets

for their first twittering roll call

I want to keep your song in my heart

as I drive the highways and byways

on my way to work

you make the distance loses its irritability

as traffic ruptures the dawn of day

and the lilting echo in your voice

gives me hopes and desires

with Herculean strength

to embrace the tasks before me

unmindful of difficulties

unmindful of the beginning

and the end

they will never meet

never for a daunting moment

afraid of tomorrow

or the next day

because in your voice

lies the secret key of our survival

and I will play your song forever

unblemished of any thought

of what my life will be like

if I lose you lose you.
