Why is the Bible boring

by Lena Davis

Created on: November 15, 2009

When I was dead in my trespasses and sin reading the Bible was very tedious; in fact, I had little desire to do so, and when I did my understanding was not fruitful always. Having been raised in the traditions of faith, I still was not inspired when I read the scriptures as some testified that they were after hearing a sermon or reading a passage.

One day, I had an awakening while on vacation in Puerto Rico during my sophomore year in college. I was growing tired of the emptiness I felt inside as a result of my sins. I sincerely asked God to reveal himself to me, the truth, in the hotel room where I stayed: I opened up the Bible that was there and began to read a passage that I know I had read many times previously with little stirring inside myself.

This passage was found in St. John the first chapter, " In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him; and without him was not anything made that was made. In him was life; and the life was the light of men. And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehendeth it not." I could finally see that light. The Spirit of God had enlighten me to the truth of God's word; he always was and will always be God who came in the flesh to dwell among men to redeem us.

I'd like to submit to the reader that the Bible is a living document. Jesus said that his words are spirit and they are life: he is the living and the written word. Apostle Paul expresses that the word of God is quick and powerful. This means that death, through the works of the flesh, enters our spirits and bodies, but when we receive the word of God, we are revived, quickened to come alive through and to the word of God. The key is to RECEIVE his word.

If the Bible is boring to the reader, it is not for lack of subject matter or the fault of the author. It is due to the spiritual state of the reader. How one reads or approaches the word of God is as equally important as to what one reads in the Bible. Coming to the Bible's open invitation out of obligation will net one little. Coming in deceit will net one nothing. We must come with an open heart and mind. Coming to the Word, who is Christ, out of need and repentance, faith and honesty, commitment and trust, love and respect will net one everything there is to gain.

"Blessed are the poor in spirit for theirs is the kingdom of heaven...Blessed are they who hunger and thirst after righteousness,
