How to record TV shows on a DISH Network HDTV receiver

So you've got your new DISH Network HDTV satellite all set up, your new HDTV is up and running and quickly being taken over by the kids, and you have something you'd like to watch in crisp, clear, high definition viewing. So what's next?

Lucky for us, the DISH Network HDTV receiver now has tons of new features built right in, one of which is recording whatever TV show it is you'd like to watch. It might all seem a bit too complex, or even overwhelming at first glance, however, it really is quite easy.

One of the simplest ways is to record a show that's already in progress. If you are watching something you don't want to miss, and someone else wants to change the channel, simply push the "record" button located on the lower center of the remote control. This will pop up a menu with three commands labeled "ok", "options", and "cancel". Using the left and right arrow keys on your remote to navigate, make sure the "ok" option is highlighted, then push the "select" button (located in the center of the arrow keys). This will record the remainder of the show for later viewing.

Another way to record a favorite TV show or movie is through creating a timer. This can just as easily be done through using the "guide" menu, and is a feature that you will use for recording a show that will air at a later time, or sometimes even at a later date.

First press the "guide" button, located on the upper right hand area of the remote control. This will pop up a menu with all of your available channels, and a programming schedule for each one. Using the up and down arrows to browse will give you a view of shows that are currently airing on any channel. You will also see what will be airing in the next hour (depending upon your settings, it could show more than one hour). Using the right arrow button will bring you to shows airing at later times, on the same channel that is highlighted.

Once browsing the "guide" menu has turned up something you'd like to record, be sure that the title you want is highlighted, then press the "record" button. This will bring you to another menu labeled "create timer". There will then be more choices available under this menu. Again, using the arrow keys will navigate around this screen, and then the "select" button will set any choice.

The first choice will be highlighted as "DVR", and you will want to leave this one as is. The next available choice is under "Frequency". This will offer the choice to do a one-time recording, such as for a movie, or to do a repetetive event such as a weekly TV series or daily talk show. Use caution when using the "All Episodes" command if you are programming any repeat event, as it can easily and quickly use up all of your recording time with reruns and airings that may be on various channels.

Once your frequency is set, move your highlight to the "Create Timer" command and push the "Select' button. This will then bring you back to the guide menu, and the show you have now set to record will show an icon by its title, letting you know that it is properly set. This method can also be used with the "Search" feature when searching for something specific that you'd like to watch.

So, now you're well on your way to having your television schedule at your command, and are ready to relax and watch what you want, when you want, in an instant.
